A workshop to build the capacity of National Natural Disaster Management Committee was held in Yangon on Thursday.
The National Natural Disaster Management Committee was formed in 2016. The workshop aims to find the challenges and difficulties which working committees are facing in undertaking the emergency response to natural disaster and rehabilitation process, Director of Relief and Resettlement Department said.
Director, Relief and Resettlement Department, Win Shwe said “There are 12 working committees comprised of the officials from different departments including health and education. Each committee has its own action plan on disaster management and reduction. Today’s workshop is to find ways to overcome the difficulties and challenges the committees are facing … so that they … the different departments can connect with each other more for relief and resettlement work.”
The workshop was jointly organized with the UN-HABITAT which is working closely with Relief and Resettlement Department in disaster risk management. The UN-HABITAT is now drawing the Earthquake Contingency plan, National Program Officer explained.
National Program officer, UN-HABITAT, Aye Zar Myo Han said “Earthquake Contingency Plan focuses on Shwe Pyi Thar and Lanmadaw townships which have lots of buildings and industries. The plan is being drawn together with township administration and Relief and Resettlement departments. Tackling the matters on contaminant in Industrial Zone due to earthquake is included in the plan.”
Such a workshop like this was also held in Mon, Kayin and Shan states as well as Ayeyawaddy and Mandalay regions respectively. There are plans to hold it in Rakhine State as well.
