Electric Tramcar: Myanmar Railways Launched The Tram Line On Strand Road
Myanmar Railways launched an electric tramcar on the Wardan-Pasodan-Linsadaung section of the strand road, Sunday. The launching ceremony was held at the Wadan Jetty with the attendance of Union Minister for Rail Transportation U Nyan Tun Aung. On the occasion, the Union Minister said launching the tramcar aimed for easing traffic congestion, providing commuters with convenient public transportation, to be skilful in the technology in transforming the diesel train to electric train and to expand the electric tramcar network in future. He also added that the electric tramcar was launched on Sule-Barkayar road in Yangon in 1904. A total of 77 electric commuter tramcars were running in Yangon Before WWII, but the services stopped during the war. Now this tramcar will be the first electric tram line in Myanmar. This Wardan-Pasodan-Linsadaung tram line is 3.5 mile long and the tram rail will run 6 times a day from 8am to 4pm with a 100-kyat fare for each commuter with the seating capacity of 180. The tramcar line starts at Wardan Jetty and ends at Linsadaung on strand road. Myanmar railways and the Japan-based West Corporation signed a 3 million USD deal for tram rail project in July 2015.
