Ethiopia frees opposition leader amid protests

14 February 2018

Ethiopia released a senior opposition leader from prison and dropped all charges against him yesterday.  This came a day after demonstrators blocked roads and staged rallies in several towns to protest against his imprisonment. He was sentenced last month to six months for contempt of court after he and other opposition members sang a protest song during their trial. His supporters took to the streets in celebration after they heard their leader were freed.
