14 January 2018

In Peru, a fire scorched Lima's 131-foot Christ of the Pacific statue yesterday. The accident broke out just days ahead of a visit by Pope Francis. The fire left soot marks covering one side of the statue. Police confirmed to local media that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction and no foul play is suspected. The statue was erected in 2011 and donated by a Brazilian construction firm.
