German politicians play cards as crunch night of coalition talks drags on

12 January 2018

As the final day of exploratory talks that could lead to formal negotiations for forming a new German government drew to an end, collegiality was still in play on Thursday evening. Members of the CDU-SPD working group for one of the stickiest points migration and immigration were seen playing cards through the window of the SPD headquarters where the negotiations are expected to continue well into the night. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said her Conservatives still had high hurdles to clear in the talks on forming a coalition with the Social Democrats who are pressing for accelerated integration of European Union states.
