Japan successfully launches fourth GPS satellite

10 October 2017

Japan successfully launches its fourth GPS satellite today. The new satellite will complement the U.S. GPS version. It will minimize positioning error from about 10 metres to only several centimetres. This will increase the precision of GPS information used in smartphones and car navigation system. More satellites are expected to be launched later to enhance the system. But a basic four-satellite GPS system is expected to be operational in 2018.
