Tens of thousands gather in referendum protest in Barcelona

21 September 2017

Hundreds of people surrounded the leftist pro-independence CUP party headquarters in Barcelona on Wednesday. Spanish police has raided Catalan government offices and arrested officials to halt a banned referendum on independence. Spanish media reports said the units present at the CUP headquarters were ready for a raid, but police sources weren't immediately available for confirmation. Police efforts to stop the vote on October 1 have intensified in recent days as the wealthy northeastern region shows no signs of halting the referendum.
