U.S. approves digital pill that tracks when patients take it

15 November 2017

U.S. regulators have approved the first digital pill with an embedded sensor technology. The medicine is a version of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co Ltd's established drug Abilify for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. The system offers doctors an objective way to measure if patients are swallowing their pills on schedule. It works by sending a message from the pill's sensor to a wearable patch. It will then transmit the information to a mobile application to tracking medication compliance.
