Afghan brothers launch new mine-hunting drone

Former refugees Massoud and Mahmud Hassani stunned the world three years ago with an invention like a dandelion puffball that sought to rid the world of landmines. Now the Afghan brothers are back with their latest creation: a low-cost drone to detect and destroy mines, which each year claim thousands of lives.  >>> Mine Kafon Foundation, Massoud Hassani <<< "The Mine Kafon drone works in three steps. It flies over a whole field first with a camera onboard. It maps the whole area with 3D mapping system so we know where to start. And then second step, it flies over the area with a metal detector, which has a robotic arm that can detect landmines below the ground. Third step is, drone puts a small detonator on top of every detection, and it blows up from a safe distance. So in these three steps, we can destroy landmines up to 20 times faster."  Landmines are scattered in 78 countries, and each year kill between 15,000 and 20,000 people and maim countless more, according to UN figures.  Despite huge progress in mine-clearing, Afghanistan remains one of the most-mined countries in the world.
