Cape Town Carnival

Troupes of performers marched on 2nd January in the annual Cape Town Minstrels Carnival, playing Ghoema music, comic songs often accompanied by brass, or banjo. The carnival is traditionally held on January 2, called the "Second New Year", and dates back to the time when slaves in the Cape Colony were given the day after the New Year off, which they spent, in part, singing and dancing.
