Fire in Japan car tunnel kills two
Two people died and 68 people were injured on Thursday after a fire engulfed cars that had crashed inside the Hachihonmatsu tunnel in western Japan, NHK reported. Flames engulfed five of the 12 cars involved in a pile up at around 7:30 am local time, NHK added. One person was found dead inside the tunnel, while a 65-year-old man later died after he was rushed to hospital, NHK said quoting the police. According to local firefighters and rescuers, many of those went to hospital inhaled smoke while escaping the fire. The highway, officially known as the Sanyo Expressway, runs from Kobe, Osaka, through Hiroshima, and ends at Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is one of the main routes of car traffic in western Japan. It was opened in 1997, and is about 450 km long.
