Flydubai Confirms Plane Crash In Russia That Killed 62 People

The Chief Executive Officer of Flydubai confirmed on Saturday that a passenger jet operated by the Dubai-based budget carrier crashed upon landing in Rostov-on-Don of Southern Russia.

[Soundbite] FLYDUBAI CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, GHAITH AL GHAITH: "It is with deep sadness that our flight from Dubai to Rostov in Russia has crashed on landing and this morning our thoughts and prayers are with those on board and their loved ones and families. We are doing everything that we can to help those who have been affected."

All 62 people aboard the Boeing 737-800 were killed after it crashed on its second attempt to land at Rostov-on-Don airport, the Investigative Committee of Russia said in a statement on its website. The plane came down inside the airport's perimeter, about 250 metres short of the start of the runway. The Investigative Committee of Russia said on Saturday that it is looking into a pilot error or a technical failure as the most likely causes for the plane crash. A representative of Rostov's emergency ministry said at a briefing that flight recorders have not yet been recovered.
