Intellectual Property: World IP Day Marked In Yangon

Aiming to raise awareness on intellectual property protection and intellectual property rights, the World Intellectual Property Day is observed at UMFCCI in Yangon, Monday.

World Intellectual Property Organization was created in 1967 to encourage creative activity, to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world.

This event is hoped to push for the emergence of an up-to-date and efficient IP law in the country.

Vice President , Myanmar IP Proprietors’ Association, Tin Ohnmar Tun: There is still no IP law in Myanmar and we are waiting for the approval of the parliament. We also need to open governmental IP service office in Myanmar for trademarks registration and inspection of innovation and copyrights.

Lawyer, Highsee 12 Layers Association, Nyar Na Myo: We have IP law but it’s very old and inactive in Myanmar. We lost many opportunities to compare with World IP rights. Currently, as our law firm, we can only register trademark of entrepreneurs but we cannot do any more than that.

Attendees affected by the subject, including local artists, are hopeful a new IP law will emerge soon to help them compete in the international level.

Artist, Myanmar Artists Organization Central, Moe Kyaw Thant: Such kind of workshop, seminar and celebration can help people know more about IP rights. If there are IP rights, we can compete our artist work internationally.

Over 200 participants attended the event.
