Kayin Language: Summer Course Concluded

The closing ceremony of Kayin Language training course during the summer holidays was held at Insein Myothit Kayin Baptist Church in Yanogn, Saturday.

The aim of this summer training is to promote the Kayin language among the Kayin nationals and to preserve the ethnic language.

Organizer, Mahn Aung Thaung: Actually, we always hold such trainings not only at the churches but also at homes to teach our children. This is very helpful for the children. We teach the Sgaw Kayin language this year. We also teach Poe Kayin language in previous years.

6 teachers volunteered in teaching reading and writing skills, as well as songs and dances. More than 50 students did the course.

Teacher, Thara Hser law la: We divided the children into different levels in terms of their age. For the beginners, we start teaching the basic level with songs and games. There are many Kayin people living in the cities and towns but the most of them do not speak their ethnic language. So we want to promote our language among them.

This is an annual class for the students who want to learn the Kayin languages during the summer holidays.

Student, Saw Ba Htut: I will attend the grade 8 in the coming academic year. In my summer holidays, I attend the Kayin language course because I am a Kayin national. And I have a plan to attend the English grammar course and violin course. Kayin language is important for me and I want to perverse my language.

The two main types of Kayin are Poe and Sgaw. There are around 5 million Kayin people living in Kayin State and south and southwest of Myanmar.
