Kuki Ethnic : Hopes To Be Added To National Census
914-Kuki National Affairs Representative Committee is trying to add the Kuki ethnic in the latest census, which will be implemented after a discussion among all nationalities from Myanmar this year.
According to historical data, Kuki, also known as the Chin in the Chin State of Myanmar and as Mizo in the Indian state of Mizoram, are related to Tibeto-Burman tribal peoples. They have spread across northeastern states of India, northwest Myanmar, and Chittagong in Bangladesh.
In Myanmar, 2014 population and housing census was successfully released, but the data were based on the 135 nationalities across the country. The Kuki ethnic was not included in the current census.
Spokesperson ,914-Kuki Representative Committee ,Dr. Neh Kho Lal : "Most of the Kuki nationalities live in the upper Sagaing region, Chin State and over 40,000 nationalities speak Kuki language. So, we really expect to add our nationality in the latest census.... At the same time, if we know the exact data of our nationalities, we can demand for our rights".
He added that a meeting among nationalities and government representatives will be held this year, aimed at identifying the exact number of nationalities in Myanmar.
