Librarians Conference: To Sustain Libraries/ Promote Reading Habit

Aiming to exchange views among librarians for the sustainable development of libraries across the nation and to promote reading habits, the 3rd Myanmar Librarians Conference was held in Yangon, Saturday.

Records from the Myanmar Libraries Foundation show that, there are more than 50,000 libraries in 60,000 villages nationwide.

Aside from the increasing number of libraries in the country, the main aim of this activity is to promote reading habits and conducting librarians training for the libraries development, one of the members from Myanmar Libraries Foundation said.

Central Committee Member, Myanmar Libraries Foundation, Author Hein Latt: For the sustainable development of libraries in the country, the government really needs to increase the budgets for the libraries development, to reduce the transportation fees for sending books to other states and regions and also to conduct the training for librarians nationwide.

Local NGOs like Kan Baw Za Youth Library & Reading Club also attended the conference, aiming to exchange views on sustainable development of libraries and knowledge.

Director, Kan Baw Za Youth Library & Reading Club, Ye Aung: Nowadays, most of the young people are not much familiar with the books and literature as many forms of entertainment are emerging day by day. Currently, our country lacks the education system that is based on library so I think if they can establish the library-based education system, the next generation will understand and be familiar with library.

Most of the librarians believe this conference will bring library development and better solutions to promote reading habit.

Librarian, Pyin Nyar Beikman Library (Pwint Phyu Tsp.), Khine Lin: We established the library in 2013 in our Ywar Thit village of Pwint Phyu township aiming to support the better education system for the village by opening library and now we are trying for the sustainable development of our village library. So, I expect to get more knowledge for our village library's development through this conference.

The conference was organized by the Information and Public Relations Department, Myanmar Libraries Foundation and Myanmar Libraries Association. It runs till Sunday.
