Maha Thamaya Day: Celebration At Shwedagon Pagoda
On the full moon day of Nayon, Maha Thamaya Day is celebrated at the pagodas, across the county. The Shwedagon pagoda in Yangon celebrated the festival resoundingly.
According to the Buddhist belief, the full moon day of Nayone is known as Maha Thamaya Day because Lord Buddha preached Maha Thamaya Sutta to the gods and Bramahs from ten thousand universes, who came to worship Him. Lord Buddha preached Maha Thamaya Sutta to calm the people from Thakiya and Kawliya who were preparing for the war against each other as the river water they were sharing was gradually dried up and causing scarcity of water and they faced difficulties for agriculture. After arguing which country should use the water, they prepared to wage the war and so, Lord Buddha came to calm them down by preaching them saying they should value their lives than water.
Office head, Board of Trustee (Shwedagon Pagoda), Tun Aung Ngwe: We are holding Maha Thamaya Day celebration on this full moon day of Nayone by offering dawn meal called (Ar Yone Soon), alms meal and cash donation to Ovada Sayadaws, listen to the religious sermons, demonstrate the history of Nayon Full Moon Day that happed in the time of Lord Buddha. Then we strike the bells to prayer for peace of the people in the whole world. The photos about Maha thamaya day is also displayed at the U Poe Thaung Tazaung.
Member, Wat Association: Kyaw KyawOur Wut association is comprised of more than 80 members. We're going to take part in the procession and then recite wut in the Chanthagyi Tazaung. Out association recite religious verses every Saturday evening at this pagoda and offer fruits, flowers, water and alms on the Sunday morning.
One of the visitors to the pagoda on this full moon day of Nayon full moon day said that she feel peace as she come to the pagoda on this religious significant day.
Khin Chaw Su Hlaing: I'm a regular comer to this pagoda especially on my birthdays and religious significant days. Today is my birthday and both the date and day are coincided. I feel peace to come to the pagoda especially on this Maha Thamaya Day.
The Pagoda Board of Trustee said that this festival aims to bring peace to the world and people to lead harmonious lives like the people from both countries and the gods and Bhramas felt peace of mind, after listening to the Maha Thamaya Sutt.
