North Korea fired short range missiles into the sea off its eastern coast on Thursday

North Korea fired short range missiles into the sea off its eastern coast on Thursday, South Korea's defence ministry said, hours after the UN Security Council imposed tough new sanctions on Pyongyang. "The North fired several short-range missiles into the East Sea (Sea of Japan) at 10:00am (0100 GMT)," ministry spokesman Moon Sang-Gyun said. This coincides with the time that the 15-members UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Wednesday to impose new sanctions on the DPRK in order to curb the country's nuclear and missile programs. The resolution, in response to DPRK's nuclear test on Jan. 6 and satellite launch on Feb. 7, expanded the sanctions regime against the DPRK by imposing a ban on all exports of coal, iron, iron ore, gold, titanium ore, vanadium ore and rare earth metals from the DPRK, and banning the supply of all types of aviation fuel, including rocket fuel, to the country. Liu said China is concerned about the security situation in the Korean peninsula and opposes the possible deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), an advanced U.S. missile defense system, in the Republic of Korea (ROK).
