North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watches air force contest

North Korea's state-run television KRT broadcast video of leader Kim Jong Un watching a competition involving the country's air force. KRT did not specify the date of the contest but said Kim arrived at Kalma Airport in the port city of Wonsan to watch the event. The video showed Kim watching the air combat contest including fighter jets firing at targets on an island. KRT said the contest was part of "war preparations" against the United States and South Korea. State media quoted Kim as saying the event was intended to "bring about a radical turn in the drills to round off preparations for a war...with the U.S. imperialists, the chieftain of aggression, and the South Korean puppet group keen to escalate the confrontation". KRT added that the event was held to mark the 62nd anniversary of the Korean Armistice on July 27. North and South Korea are still technically at war because the 1950-53 war ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.
