Official Launching: Singaporean PM Opened Vocational Training Institute

Singapore-Myanmar Vocational Training Institute (SMVTI) was officially launched Thursday by Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsine Loong. 

The SMVTI is a joint project between Singapore and Myanmar Governments to provide skilled trainings to support industrialization of Myanmar. The aim is to enhance vocational and technical education as well as to provide skilled labor to the Myanmar industries.

The SMVTI was soft launched last year and have trained 6-month courses in Hotel and Tourism, electrical and electronics, engineering services and facilities management ever since. The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) of Singapore is consultant for curriculum content and school management.

Director General , Department of Technical & Vocational Education , Win Maw Tun : We intend to disseminate education for work place and education for career. The first intake students who finished from this school got job easily in big companies. The applicants need to sat for entrance test.  We intend to bring HR development and capacity building to our citizen. We have planned to expand our subject range. 

The SMVTI has 81 Myanmar staff and three Singaporean staff deployed from ITE. SMVTI also signed MOU with local and international hotels and Engineering industries and the students will easy access to the job opportunity. 

First Batch, SMVTI , Khine Nyein Thu : I had to sat for the entrance twice.  I am working as a hotel receptionist in Chetrum hotel. I finished front office course here. Singapore and Myanmar government provided to us with the courses which are for free. We learned theoretically and practically. 70% of the score is counted from practical works. I suggest the youths join this school and trainers are very patient. 

The students said that the courses are practice-oriented, equipped and provided to their capacity building development. 

Second Batch , SMVTI , Swan Htet Kay Zaw Myat : I am now attending housekeeping services training in the second batch. I like theory and practical courses of in this institute. I will serve in hotel industry. The hotels that signed MoU with this institute will come and recruit if I’m outstanding.

So far, about 800 students finished certificate of Competency in this institute.
