Parliament: Issues On Electrification Discussed

Topics on electrification were mainly discussed at the Pyithu Hluttaw, Peoples’ Parliament, on Friday.

MP U Myo Nyunt from Honemalin constituency asked for to add the building of hydro-power plant in the 2017-2018 National Project.

The hydropower plant is targeted to provide electricity to over 6,700 households using Nant Pan Ngar Creek, according to an analysis by the Sagaing Region Government.

The Ministry of Electric and Power denied to include it as it is not a national project and urged the regional government to implement it as a small scale project. The ministry technical assistance will be provided.

Meanwhile, MP U Nay Myo Htet from Kyouktada Constituency asked for plans in getting sufficient voltage in Yangon, especially in the hot season. The MP also highlighted that cases of faulty transmission and distribution should be looked into as well, to avoid more voltage loses.

According to figures from the Ministry of Electric and Power, there is about 236 megawatt of electricity usage in the city last summer, from March to May. The ministry estimates that about 375 megawatt will be used in the coming summer. In order to fill the need, the ministry plans to use electricity additionally from electric plants at Thilawa, Mawlamyine and from private IPP electric plant.
