Penguin returns to his saviour in Brazil
A Patagonian penguin returns to an island off of Rio de Janeiro every year to visit the retired bricklayer who saved him five years ago. Ashraf Fahim from Reuters has this report. Reporter, Reuters, Ashraf Fahim...For the fifth year in a row Dindim the penguin emerges onto the Brazilian coast into the arms of the man who saved his life. The unlikely friendship between Dindim and Brazilian pensioner Joao Pereira de Souza started in 2011. The retired bricklayer says he discovered the tiny South American Magellanic penguin floundering on the rocks, starving and coated in oil. De Souza nursed him back to health and now he says he loves Dindim like he was his own child. After he rescued him de Souza gave Dindim his nickname and then the penguin set off back to his home in the frosty Patagonia breeding grounds. Now every year around June he makes the 5,000 mile (8,000 kilometer) journey to warmer waters near Rio where he is reunited with his human friend. Dindim makes himself at home here. He is fed and cared for. To cool off, he takes the occasional shower or enjoys a splash in the waves with de Souza. A biologist who met them said he's never seen anything like it. He believes the penguin thinks de Souza is part of his family and probably a penguin too.
