The country is one rank up when compared to the list last year, but scored worse in terms of global scale. According to the report initiated by the Reporters without Borders, the government seemed to have “opted to closely monitored freedom instead of drastic censorship”.

There is more freedom to covering politics, the report said, but added that state-run media agencies continue to censor themselves and still avoid criticisms about the government and the armed forces.

Press Council Member Myint Kyaw said local journalists continue to face difficulties in writing stories especially in acquiring information necessary in publishing balanced and unbiased news.

MEMBER, PRESS COUNCIL, MYINT KYAW: Although there is no more censorship, there are lot of difficulties in getting information like public information from the government, ministries and armed forces. Sometimes we encounter delay in getting public information. So in that case, we can’t give full information to the readership and somehow can give partly.

Myint Kyaw also urged for the drafting of laws that can protect the rights of journalists, coupled with a good judiciary system, for the further development of Myanmar press.
