Relocation: Rehabilitation Process Are Still On Progress In Hakha
Rehabilitation process are still on progress in Hakha township although it has been over 8 months after devastating landslides at that place, including relocation and providing cash assistance to the disaster-hit people.
Chin State Government provided over 2 million kyats to landslide victims in Hakha, starting from 9th of this month as the first phase.
There are over 700 households; over 4000 people were affected by landslides in July 30th. According to the residents, out of 700, over 400 households decided to live relocated housed provided by the government. The rest 315 households chose to build the houses with their own plan.
The government provided over 4.4 million kyat per a household. At present, new locations are already offered to over 280 out of 315 households. The place is located on Hakha-Falam road.
RESIDENT, SAI MON: When we got the first half of amount, we can only buy some requirements like wood and others. But we still haven’t had the location where we are going to live in. We want to finish the construction work before the monsoon.
On the other hand, there are still some people who want to live in their original places where landslide happened. There are around 20 to 30 households who want to live in their previous places, although experts considered as dangerous places to live in, according to the Regional Government.
MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK, CHIN STATE, VAN THAWNG: They said they don’t want to migrate so they want to live at their original places. Generally, it is impossible to allow them, but they said they can take responsibility when if unexpected disasters happen. So we allowed them to live in their own places.
RESIDENT, MAUNG KHAM: Of course it is sure there won’t happen any disaster again in our place, because such a kind of disaster will be happened over 50 years later at once. My age is 62 years old, I haven’t experienced about it along my life. So if it happen again, I’m sure it will be on over 100 years later.
The Chin State Government target to finish rehabilitation processes before 1st April when the next government takes office.
