Safe Water Source: Village In Dry Zone Gets Water At Ease

Villagers in Ywar Thit village can now enjoy the fresh water supply from the borehole, well points and pumps donated  by the Hyundai steel in cooperation with Chanmyae Myittar Co-operative Society, Plan International and Community chest of Korea. Su Myat Yadana visited the village in Nyaung Oo township for this report.

There are about 100 villages in Nyaung Oo district and about 17 villages cannot access to safe water for drinking and Ywar Thit village is one of them.

They had to rely on rain water and shallow wells dug by hand. Now, the situation has changed.

ADMINISTRATOR, NYAUNG OO DISTRICT , TIN HTOO MAUNG : Now, they can access to safe water. But sustainability of the borehole is very important for them. The organizations are teaching them how to sustain them for the long-run.

The 55-year old villager said that this is the first time he can access to the clean water at ease saying he was very much happy about the new water facility.

VILLAGER, YWAR THIT VILLAGE , TIN WIN MAUNG : Previously, we had a lot of difficulties for availability of water. We couldn't even do anything else but fetching water. The Hand holes on which we rely gradually dried up. Words fail to express my graduate to the donors. It is the first time that I can easily access safe water. We will maintain it for the next generations.

Due to the changes in weather pattern last summer, the hand holes dried up and even water from the borehole dug by the government became undrinkable.

Hyundai steel company is digging boreholes in those areas under a 3-year project.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR , HYUNDAI STEEL: We have heard that a lot of villages in dry zone have been facing the problem of scarcity of water, and that is why we choose the plan to donate well points, and pumps.  We have plans for more developments program but we haven’t decided yet whether it will be in Myanmar or not.

Regional development projects has been carried out in this region by the local and international organizations since 2013.
