Sim Card Registration: Mobile Security & Mobile Banking

Department of Post and Telecommunication officially announced 1st August that all sim card users must make registration with their network providers for the mobile phone service and the registration for the final deadline is on 31st March next year. 

The move is reportedly to protect public safety, to ensure mobile security and to allow for SIMs to use as identification devices in online shopping and mobile banking.

Three mobile operators: MPT, Telenor and Ooredoo are mainly operating telecommunication service in Myanmar and there are about 47 million telecom users across the country.

To register with their respective operators, users need to present an identification document and a local address; foreigners need to bring a passport.

CEO, Ooredoo Myanmar, Rene Meza: “Sim card registration in Asian we started long time ago by putting in place right technology, right process... We have all networks about 100,000. All the retail outlets of dealer are will be equipped with the applications with allow them to register customers. That's all, we started and reason while 75 percent of customers are fully register.

Senior Expert , Telenor Myanmar (Corporate Communications ), Alex Nyi Nyi Aung : We arrange the plan for our Telenor sim card users to reconfirm with the operator. They can call the Telenor service centre to inform about their sim cards are registered or not. We will let them know the place to make registration and some applications for the customers. 

The announcement said that if the users fail to register before March 31st 2017, network operators will temporarily eliminate service to unregistered SIM cards. The mobile shop owner said, if the users cooperate in the registration process, the function will be smooth.

Owner , AM mobile, Wai Mon Htun: For registration, the customers need to cooperate with us. Now, the government announced the sim-card registration will be closed in March next year. Now, every operator is preparing for the customers to be able to register conveniently.

There are over 8.2 million Ooredoo users and 7 million Telenor users in Myanmar, and 25 percent of Ooredoo users out of 8.2 millions have not yet registered now.
