Sugar Trade: Indian/Thai White Sugar Export To Myanmar Tends To Low
Analysts estimate that Indian and Thai white sugar export to Myanmar will keep decreasing due to draught and domestic market surge in India although white sugar demand in China is still strong, according to a Reuters report. The two countries smuggle sugar into China via Myanmar earning 100 USD for a ton of white-over-raw refining premium. The flow of sugar into Myanmar started to decline after the crackdown on smuggling into China. “Volumes of white sugar shipped to Myanmar soared last year due to a jump in smuggling to China because of high domestic prices in the world's top sugar buyer”, the Reuters report said. Sugar yields in India and Thailand has decreased due to draught, which reduced output estimates. In the second half of the last fiscal year, India exported more than 900,000 tons of white sugar, and Thailand 475,000 tons, to Myanmar. Most of them believed to have been smuggled into China, according to Reuters.
