Taiwan students in education ministry compound in textbook protest

Taiwan students occupied the Ministry of Education compound, protesting over textbooks they say are aimed at promoting Beijing's "One China" policy, after hundreds of students stormed the compound in the early hours of the morning. About 700 students climbed barricades around the ministry and demanding an audience with the island's education minister. As police stood on guard around the compound, demonstrators held banners and chanted, calling for the education minister to apologize and step down from his post. An unidentified official from the ministry called for talks with student representatives. The students say revisions to high-school textbooks present a warped version of history slanted toward China and are aimed at brainwashing them to accept a "one China" policy. Over the past several months, young activists have taken to the streets scuffling with police and forcing their way into government offices, in protest against the government's pro-Beijing stance.
