Terminal-1: Yangon Airport Unveils New Builing For International Flights
The New International Terminal-1 of Yangon International Airport was opened Saturday to accommodate Myanmar’s increasing number of tourist arrivals.
Yangon International airport, the country's main international gateway, launched its new wing to provide better services to the passengers for international flights.
This newest international terminal is the first of the planned three, which will be built over the next years. Terminal-1 will mainly service international flights, which will be gradually moved from the old terminal beginning this month.
[Soundbite] General Manager, Yangon International Airport, Nyi Nyi Maung: "It mainly prioritizes aircraft safety, passenger safety and security. It will be with three phases and accommodate 20 million passengers after completed. The first and second floors are mainly for arrival and departure and the third will house duty free shop and restaurants."
Yangon Aerodrome Company spearheaded the project, which began in 2014.
[Soundbite] Project Manager, Yangon Aerodrome Company Limited, Nay Lin: "We are upgrading the old domestic terminal and connect it with the previous international terminal and the new one. We have a master plan to extend 20 boarding bridges, 20 remote gates and to accommodate 20 million passengers a year."
[Soundbite] Member, Myanmar Investment Commission, U Nyunt Tin: "Our country is booming in tourism sector and I hope it catches up with international standard. The facility and quality is good and I hope it provides better services."
The new expansion terminal cost about 660million USD and it will be able to handle 6 million passengers a year.
