UNHCR Says Idomeni Camp Poses Risks For Migrants
The UNHCR said on Friday that migrants camping at the Greek border outpost of Idomeni should be moved to centres with better conditions, but the refugees are finding it difficult to accept that the border with Macedonia will not reopen. The Balkan route was the preferred gateway into western and northern Europe last year for around one million migrants fleeing the conflict zones of the Middle East and beyond. But more than 12,000 migrants and refugees have been stranded in Idomeni since February after a cascade of border shutdowns across the Balkans closed off their route. Many of the migrants in Idomeni say they want to head to Germany, where they believe they will have better access to welfare and better living conditions. More than 1.1 million migrants reached the EU last year, most of them following an overland path from Greece to Germany.
