World’s largest moth found in southwest China

The world's largest moth was found in Tengchong, southwest China’s Yunnan Province late last month. On July 27, a gigantic "butterfly" fell on a potted plant in the yard of Wuhe Township government. Besides its huge size, it also boasts extremely bright patterns and a forewing that looks like a snake's head. The species is not butterfly but a kind of moth called Attacus atlas. This amazing insect can survive for only one to two weeks because it doesn't have a fully developed mouth to enable it to feed itself. It merely survives on the larval fat reserves. But fortunately, it is capable of mating and laying eggs to ensure the survival of this species despite its short adult life.
