Jobs grow scarce as China's economy slows
As the world's second largest economy slows, the threat of unemployment looms for migrant workers. Natasha Howitt from Reuters has this report. Reporter, Reuters, Natasha Howitt .... It's a squeeze getting to the front of the queue at this job fair in Beijing. China's economy grew 6.9 percent last year, the slowest in more than two decades. Factories are shedding jobs and migrant workers are desperate to find employment. Those who still have jobs fear they could be next to be shown the door. The government said on Monday that 1.8 million in the coal and steel industries are expected to be laid off. Twenty-five-year-old migrant, Jiang Shuaihui, is one of the lucky ones - he recently found a job at a customer service call centre. Though it pays little, he is happy given the current economic climate. China's next Five-Year Plan is soon to be released, and all eyes are on the country's ability to manage unemployment. Massive layoffs could trigger widespread social unrest, a situation the government is more than keen to avoid.
