Police clash with fishermen during protest over anchovy fishing limits
Clashes broke out in northern Chile on Friday as local fishermen in the town of Arica demonstrated a new law which limits the amount of anchovy they are allowed to harvest. Tension heightened after riot police were called in to clear a main road the protesting fishermen had blockaded. They want the government to re-instate their permission to fish for anchovies, after many locals were left without work. But negotiations have failed to break deadlock. According to the president of the Artisanal Fishermen of Arica, they had dialogue with the governor and other people but in reality they made no progress. The president also said that the solutions the responsible persons have for them are in 'the long term'. The fishermen have been protesting the law for some three months, but Friday's incident was the most violent so far. Police fired tear gas as protesters threw stones. According to media, 14 people were injured in the clashes.
