Union Government : MPs Welcome Kyauk Phyu SEZ Project

Pyihtaungsu Hluttaw assembled the 21st day meeting of its last session on Tuesday at capital Nay Pyi Taw As for the Tuesday meeting, MPs agreed setting up of the Kyauk Phyu Special Economic Zone on 4,000 acres of land. The issue was sent by the President and 11 mps discussed it since Monday session.

They welcomed the SEZ saying it would be very beneficial for growth of the country’s economy. But on the other hand, MPs raised their concern over the impact on the environment by the project. They also talked about the rights and opportunities of the residents and said that the process need to  have transparency. MPs also added that more opportunities should be offered to local investors.

424 MPs supported the setting up of Kyauk Phyu SEZ, and 23 objected.In addition, Speaker U Shwe Man sent a letter to the president, concerning with the parliament's remarks on the government’s plan to prevent casualties in Hpakant jade mines. The three options submitted by the government were, to stop jade mining by the companies,  to apply martial law and to issue section 144 in the area. Speaker U Shwe Man said that these suggestions will have negative repercussion on food and shelter of residents as well as peace process.

He suggested the government seeks a better way to solve the issue.Meanwhile MPs agreed with the amendment of the Specific Goods Tax bill, which was amended by the Bill Joint Committee. The bill was submitted by the Ministry of Finance in December 9th.
