Vote Counting Under Way Amid Protests And Allegations Of Vote-Rigging

Ugandans voted in a largely peaceful poll on Thursday which was marred by long delays at some voting precincts. Voting in most polling stations closed at 1600 local time (1300 GMT) but in some areas it was extended to 1900 local time (1600 GMT) due to delays. A handful of polling stations will re-open on Friday, according to the electoral commission. At a polling station in the capital Kampala, hundreds of residents converged at a station where vote counting had started. Some onlookers complained that the commission had not provided all the necessary equipment to enable the process to run smoothly.

KAMPALA RESIDENT, MOHAMED SEMAWEMBE, : "So far the ballot papers that has been counted is not even a quarter way and its becoming dark so we are not really happy with the way things are going on,"

Museveni, 71, came to power in 1986 after waging a five-year guerrilla war and many Ugandans credit him with providing relative peace and economic stability.
