Parliament: New Speaker Elected

Myanmar’s newly minted MPs elect leaders this morning, as the National League for Democracy-dominated houses usher in a new era of parliament. The new Pyithu Hluttaw People’s Parliament Speaker is now U Win Myint, while U T Khun Myat is elected as deputy speaker. A formal transfer of duty was done after the oath taking ceremony. Speaker U Win Myint urged parliamentarians to “bring honor” to the country as the new parliament has emerged as a result of smooth democratic reforms. The Speaker pushed for democratization, human rights and development from the angle of legislation. The parliament resumes on Thursday.
