Rice Supply Enough: More Than 500,000 Tonnes Of Rice Remain

The Ministry of Commerce said although rice production has slowed due to recent floods, Myanmar’s current stockpiles of rice are expected to last until December, according to the global new light of Myanmar. The Ministry also said that more than 500,000 tonnes of rice remain in the country.

The recent floods covered more than 1.4 million acres of rice and destroyed more than 800,000 acres.

Ayeyawady Region was not affected by the flooding as severely as other regions. The newspaper stated that more than 300,000 acres of rice fields were inundated and but more than 200,000 acres emerged undamaged. Among them, 100,000 acres were totally destroyed and more than 70,000 acres have been replanted  according to the Ayeyawady Region Chambers of Commerce and Industry.  

About 50 percent of the farmers in Myauk U and Minbya in Rakhine State was severely affected by flooding and that paddy have been replanted according to the survey conducted by the local Foundation. The harvest season for rice planted in rain-fed fields will begin in October.
