Reactions to Trump's Victory
U.S. President Barack Obama pledged on Wednesday to work for a smooth transition of power with President-elect Donald Trump, the Republican winner of Tuesday's election. U.S. PRESIDENT, BARACK OBAMA <<< "I had a chance to talk to President elect Trump last night about 3:30 in the morning I think it was to congratulate him on winning the election. And I had a chance to invite him to come to the White House tomorrow to talk about making sure that there is a successful transition between our presidencies. Obama, during the speech at the White House, also said "we are Americans first". U.S. PRESIDENT, BARACK OBAMA <<< We're not Democrats first. We're not Republicans first. We are Americans first." Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a youth forum in Ottawa that he looked forward to working with Donald Trump. CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER, JUSTIN TRUDEAU <<< "We share a purpose our two countries where we want to build places where the middle class and those working hard to join it have a chance. We need governments focused on service and that's what we're going to keep doing. We're going to keep working with people right around the world. We're going to with our neighbours and I'm going to work with President elect Trump's administration as we move forward in a positive way for not just Canadians and Americans but the whole world." Trump vowed on the campaign trail to revise or tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA, under which Canada sends 75 percent of its exports to the United States.
